The Causes of Gum Recession in Periodontal Disease
Posted by: admin / Category: Health, Oral CareThose in the dental profession are familiar with the saying that as people gets older; "long of tooth" is experienced. This means that as we grow old, the gums surrounding the teeth recede to the roots exposing more of the roots of the tooth as they are uncovered, making the teeth look elongated. This process is commonly known as recession of the gums which is considered one of the damaging effects of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease can be easily prevented by simply performing practices of good oral hygiene. But once you already contracted the disease, getting rid of it is something that is already difficult to accomplish. The generation of today is seen to be more prone to periodontal disease since good oral hygiene didn't exist yet when the older people now were still young.
Periodontal disease is mainly caused by plaque build-up produced by bacteria that thrive on sugar. They feed on food particles left on the crevices of the teeth not removed by brushing and excretes waste that gets caught in the film surrounding the teeth. The teeth become the seat of their waste which is toxic, can harm the tooth enamel, and destroy the soft tissues in the mouth. The toxins form plaque which starts to irritate the gums and can cause bleeding. This is one of the first signs of periodontitis as the immune system of the body creates many tiny blood vessels in the areas affected, to fight against the disease.
The mild form of periodontal disease is gingivitis which can be easily reversed by simply cleaning the teeth at least once daily. Thorough cleaning for about two weeks can reverse the effects of gingivitis and you will notice the mouth restored to its normal state. Pain is not usually felt in the early stages of periodontal disease so that there is a need to be aware of the signs and attended to before it is too late. People need to find out whether they have the disease in order to reverse the symptoms as soon as these are noticed. The best way to keep away from this disease is to practice proper routine techniques of brushing and flossing.
Periodontitis will eventually cause the teeth to fall out so that you can see older people without teeth nowadays. It is obvious that they were the ones not following the proper oral care to save their teeth. It is always a must to visit your dentist regularly in order to monitor what stage of the disease you are already in once you already have it. However, the best treatment for the disease is to prevent it from happening in the first place.
